PSU: (Test of University Selection) is a test which you must take in order to study in any university of Chile
Private Universities: Some of them ask this taken, but no matter the score the student gets and Some of them, simply don't ask this test taken.
Public Universities: They ask the minimal score you must get in order to study in a public university.
PSU are composed by 4 subjects (3 of them at least have to be taken according to the career you supose to study)
- Language, 80 questions (Obligatory)
- Math, 70 questions (obligatory)
- Social science, 75 questions (Elective)
- Natural science, 80 questions (Biology, Chemistry and Physics items) (Elective)
If you prefer, you can take both elective tests
21 days after the PSU days (2 days), The results of PSU will be on air and you'll learn the score you get in each subjects, adding the NEM (Average of all grandes between 9th and 12th grade) you must postulate in one of Public University, Your PSU scores you get will be adjusted by percents and the result of it will be put by descending order, all people who took PSU, whom PSU scores (adjusted by percents) are in posicion between N°1 and N° maximum which each career may hold, are inside and just have to matriculate and start to study, but ¿What's happens with people, who took PSU, are out?
Why is PSU a clasist method?
Because in Chile, Particular schools (High-and-upper-class-family students attend them) offer best classes, education and teaching than public schools and all because of being expensive, Millionaire people attend schools like these because they can hold enough money to pay for studying there,
According to Studies: Students who studied in particular schools get better PSU scores than Students from a Public School because of Paying for having a good education.
If a millionaire doesn't get enough PSU scores, this may study in a Private university, meanwhile a poor student doesn't get enough PSU scores, this may NOT study because of not holding enough money to study in a Private University.
Another study says: Many lower-class-family students study in Private universities because, most of them, attended to public or subsidied schools, didn't get enough PSU scores to study in a Public university.
Do you think it's a clasism?
